"I will One Day Become the 1st Deaf African American Champion of the World"
Early Life
My name is Julian Smith I was born in Blue Island Illinois. I grew up in Robbins, Illinois a tough neighborhood in the South Suburbs of Chicago. When I was 6 months old, I contracted Meningitis, causing me to become deaf. I was the only person in my family and community who was deaf. Despite all my efforts to fit in with kids in my neighborhood, it was very frustrating. I was teased, mimicked, and bullied because of my speech and because I was deaf.
Family Life
The love and support of my family has always been important factor in my life. I was strongly influenced by my mother who taught me to believe I could do anything I put my mind to. She would not allow my disability to stop me from maneuvering through life’s obstacles.
At 10, I really wanted to learn Karate. Instead, my mom enrolled me in kickboxing. Kickboxing helped me to focus, accept my disability, and eased my frustration. I felt empowered. In time, I mastered the art of kickboxing and won several medals and trophies.
My Brother
My older brother Brandon never took it easy on me, either. If neighborhood kids were going to physically bully me and harass me, Brandon was going to be that much harder on me with the goal of preparing me to defend myself. One day he came home with some boxing gloves, took me in the backyard and knocked me down. He would yell at me to “get up” I would, and he would knock me down again. I would tell Brandon I couldn’t get up again because he was too big, and too strong for me. Brandon would say I don’t care who stands in your way, you fight until you can’t fight anymore.”’
In 2012, I loss Brandon to gun violence. His sudden death broke me, angered me, and caused depression.
I struggled with my loss. Boxing turned in to my coping mechanism.
Major Accomplishments
I am proud to say I had a strong amateur boxing record 84 -7-23TKO. I have participated in several Olympic Qualifier Tournaments. I am a two-time Chicago Golden Glove Champion. I participated in a National Championship Tournament. I have 5 amateur belts including an Amateur WBC belt. I became a Professional Boxer in -2018. My current boxing record is 9-2 5 KOs. I also train and mentor the youth at our local gym.
Interesting Facts
Boxing requires drive, skill, motivation, determination, persistence, and perseverance. I have always had to work ten times harder than the best and because of this I am empowered. I will become the first deaf African American Weight Champion of the world.
